COSCO Shipping invests in the development of the FEZ "Khorgos - Eastern Gate"
The world's largest dry bulk shipping and logistics operator, China’s COSCO Shipping is investing into the development of free economic zone, "Khorgos - Eastern Gateway". Chinese investors will purchase 49% stake in the dry port. National Company Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, COSCO Shipping and port of Lianyungang have signed the tripartite agreement in Beijing. Attraction of additional capital will give an even greater impetus to the development of a regional hub to ensure the flow of goods between Europe and Asia.
KANAT ALPSYSBAYEV, CHAIRMAN, NATIONAL COMPANY KAZAKHSTAN TEMIR ZHOLY:
- Attraction of world leaders, particularly, COSCO Shipping Lines, will allow us to increase the container flows and to start practical implementation of the President's instruction to increase the container flow up to 2 million containers by 2020.
On behalf of the Kazakh President, the agreement was signed which is aimed at further development of cooperation between Kazakhstan and China in the transport and logistics sector. The head of state has repeatedly highlighted that it is necessary to attract high-level transnational companies in infrastructure projects. Therefore, the development of Khorgos port is a strategic project. It will also facilitate integration between Kazakhstan's Nurly Zhol program and China’s Silk Road Economic belt initiative.
XIU LIRONG, CHAIRMAN, COSCO SHIPPING CORPORATION LIMITED:
- We want together with Kazakhstan Temir Zholy and Port of Lianyungang to turn "Khorgos - Eastern Gateway" into a regional hub in the direction of China-Europe. Through the port of Lianyungang we will deliver the products of Central Asia, including Kazakhstan, across the sea to the world market.
The investors of the Chinese Macao are planning to build a plant of airbrick processing in Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Agriculture and the CITIC geyi Biorefineries Co., Ltd. signed the project’s memorandum. The document plans to launch an enterprise of wheat straw processing and production of paper, fertilizers and biogas.
DAVID CHOW, CHAIRMAN, CITIC GEYI BIOREFINERIES:
- The plant will produce 35,000 tons of fertilizers per day. This amount can be fully used for the needs of the local farmers. The plant will be 5 times more powerful than the paper processing plant in China. As a consequence, it will become one of the large-scale projects in the world. We plan to invest US$3 billion. The plant is environmentally friendly and fully automated. Most importantly, we will use the waste from agro-industry. Owing to the implementation of this project, over 500 local residents will be employed.
