Kyrgyzstan plans to build five ski resorts around the Issyk-kul Lake
Kyrgyzstan plans to build five ski resorts around the Issyk-kul Lake. Ambitious projects are aimed at developing winter tourism and sports. 3/4 of Kyrgyzstan’s territory is occupied by mountains which is a place for alpine skiers and snowboarders.
AZAMAT ZHAMANKULOV, DIRECTOR, TOURISM DEPARTMENT OF KYRGYZSTAN:
- Kyrgyzstan should be promoted as a country of winter tourism since other types of tourism are developing like ski tours and freeriding. There is no need for ski resorts. This is the tourism for Europeans and it might be very interesting for tourists of far abroad.
During winters the tourist flow to Kyrgyzstan grows. 15 ski resorts based on mountains are welcoming vacationers. Most travelers are from neighboring countries.
TAO GUANGYAO, TOURIST FROM CHINA:
- To be honest, this is my second time skiing in my life. I master my skills here. I've heard a lot about Kyrgyzstan. This is a resort town. I fell in love with this country and with these mountains.
Every year in winter, approximately 100,000 foreigners visit Kyrgyzstan. The country is becoming more attractive for businessmen, sportsmen, scientists as well as fans of extreme sports. The tourism is the main industry of the economy. Kyrgyzstan, having unique natural resources, has unrealized potential for development of tourism in the international and regional markets.
