Uzbekistan citizens bid farewell to President Islam Karimov
Uzbekistan people came out to the streets to bid farewell to their first President Islam Karimov. The funeral of the head of state took place in his hometown - Samarkand. Representatives of 17 countries attended the funeral ceremony. Kazakhstan was represented by Prime Minister Karim Masimov.
The farewell ceremony was held at the famous Registan Square in Samarkand. Residents from all regions of Uzbekistan, politicians, public and religious figures, as well as representatives of foreign states attended the ceremony. Uzbek people thanked Islam Karimov for the peace in their country. Islam Karimov was able to preserve independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state.
Uzbek citizens living abroad are mourning also. Since last night people are bringing flowers to the embassy of Uzbekistan in Moscow.
Islam Karimov passed away after suffering a stroke. Doctors were fighting for his life for almost a week but to no avail. The country has declared a three-day mourning.
