Paraguay and Venezuela sever diplomatic ties
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay declared a ‘complete freeze’ of relations with Venezuela and the non-recognition of its MERCOSUR presidency. Asuncion does not intend to participate in the meetings of the regional organization in the nearest future. The Foreign Minister connects this decision with the harsh statements of President Nicolas Maduro. Earlier, the Venezuelan leader has criticized the Paraguayan government for the fact that they did not support the temporary presidency of Caracas in MERCOSUR. Brazil and Argentina made a stand against too. The authorities in these countries decided that the political and economic situation in Venezuela would not allow the country to chair the largest trade union of South America.
