Expert opinions on Kazakhstan’s activities in UNSC
Kazakhstan’s presidency let raise key issues of the Central Asian region in the agenda of the UN Security Council. International experts praise Kazakhstan’s position. According to Dmitry Zhuravlev, Russian analyst, Director General of the Institute of Regional Problems, it is evidenced by Kazakhstan’s initiation of the meeting on security issues in Afghanistan and Central Asia.
DMITRY ZHURAVLEV, DIRECTOR GENERAL, INSTITUTE OF REGIONAL PROBLEMS:
- The election of Kazakhstan as the President of the UN Security Council is a landmark event in two aspects. Firstly, it is simply the recognition of the importance of Kazakhstan as an international player. Kazakhstan is equally authoritative for all key players in the political arena; there must be a trustworthy mediator to make these countries agree. This is the main international position of Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is a country that enjoys the confidence and respect of countries with absolutely different ideologies, forms of power, religion, and the structure of the economy.
Security not only in the region but in the world is important for the countries of Central Asia. President Nursultan Nazarbayev's speech at the meeting of the UN Security Council was highly appreciated by public figures of Uzbekistan. They note the relevance of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction to the world community. The Kazakh leader, in their opinion, not only talks about real challenges, but also points to concrete ways of their solution.
SAFAR OSTANOV, CHIEF EDITOR, NEWSPAPER ‘VOICE OF UZBEKISTAN’:
- In the speech, Nursultan Nazarbayev highlighted an important topic - strengthening confidence-building measures among the nuclear powers. In today's world, trust is a necessary attribute to international communication. Many problems can be solved only after the establishment of mutual cooperation and political stability. And only then these agreements will serve to preserve peace and stability.
