Quarantine restrictions to remain on weekends in Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan is starting to lift quarantine restrictions using a phased approach. Shopping and entertainment centers, beauty salons, hairdressing salons and many other small business facilities will reopen on Monday, August 17. However, Kazakh Health Ministry explained that the relaxation of quarantine measures does not apply to the weekends. In other words, all these facilities will not be able to work on Saturdays and Sundays. Kazakh Chief Sanitary Doctor Aizhan Yesmagambetova said that the lockdown will remain effective on weekends. The reason for this decision is simple: the authorities do not intend to allow another spike in coronavirus cases.
“Why do we want to keep the lockdown on weekends? The first task is to maintain the positive trend in terms of indicators that have been achieved. The main cause of the spread of infection among the population is people’s contact with each other. On weekends, people actively go to the shopping and entertainment centers and markets, so the number of such contacts increase dramatically. When we say that the work of mainly large facilities that are associated with mass gatherings of people is suspended on weekends, our task is to reduce the number of contacts. This means interrupting the transmission of infection. The logic is simple,” Yesmagambetova said.
