Work on Planting Saxaul Continues in Mangystau Region
Cultivation of small desert trees or commonly known as saxaul is being implemented in the Mangystau region. The tress will become the main decoration of a green belt around the Koshkar Ata Tailings Pond.
The planting project began five years ago. It was created with the aim to reduce radioactive substances that pose a serious threat to residents of nearby settlements. Some of the saxauls have started sprouting on 88 hectares of land.
“We launched an experiment to create the green zones in 2015 by planting the saxaul on an eight-hectare area. The project was successful. Therefore, we plan to continue the project on planting the trees this year,” said Head of Natural Resources and Environmental Department of Mangystau Region, Duisen Kusbekov.
