Kazakh president scheduled elections to Mazhilis for 10 January 2021
The next elections to the Mazhilis, the Lower House of the Kazakh Parliament elected through the party lists were scheduled for January 10, 2021. The decree was signed by President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The members from the Kazakhstan’s Ethnic Assembly will be elected the next day, on January 11. The Central Election Commission was instructed to make preparations for holding the elections. President Tokayev noted that before the start of the new election campaign, measures for political modernization, the development of a multi-party system and the expansion of civic participation in the social and political life of Kazakhstan were taken. In his address he reminded that changes will take place in the Parliament’s work. Amendments to the Constitutional Law “On the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Status of its Deputies” and to the Law “On Committees and Commissions of the Parliament” introduced changes and additions providing for the introduction of the institution of parliamentary opposition and regulation of its activities. President Tokayev also urged people to show an active citizenship and take part in the upcoming elections.
