World experts comment establishment of International Agency for Biological Safety
The idea of establishment of the International Agency for Biological Safety announced by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at the 75th United Nations General Assembly is generating keen interest of foreign experts. They said that this topic is extremely relevant now, during the coronavirus pandemic. Sergey Batsanov, Director of Geneva Office of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs shared his opinion.
“Due to historical moments and a really large number of competent experts in this field, Kazakhstan could well claim a hospitable role in relation to this regional center. Kazakh colleagues organized some kind of discussion on this topic,” said Sergey Batsanov, Director of Geneva Office of the Pugwash Conferences On Science and World Affairs.
Kazakhstan can become a key player in the promotion and solution of the biosafety issues, noted Richard Guthrie, Expert on Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention.
“Almost every aspect of the biological sciences has a positive benefit, but also a challenge. There is a need for an international structure to give confidence to people that the biological sciences are being used for peaceful purposes and not for harmful purposes. There are a range of controls that can be added in,” said Richard Guthrie, Expert on Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention.
