Kazakhstan assumes CICA Chairmanship from Tajikistan
Kazakhstan took over the chairmanship of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) from Tajikistan. Kazakh Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi presented the vision and priorities of the country as the CICA Chairman for the next two years. Further institutionalization of the CICA, which will enhance cooperation among member states, as well as enhance the multi-national forum’s status in the international arena are among the main priorities.
In addition, Kazakhstan intends to promote President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s initiatives announced during the summit in Dushanbe in June last year on the establishment of the CICA Council of Wise Men, the CICA Fund and the transformation of the CICA Think Tank Forum into a permanent platform.
Tleuberdi also stressed that the work on practical implementation of the CICA Catalogue of Confidence Building Measures, as well as the work on the expansion of external relations with other regional organizations and forums will be intensified.
During a ministerial meeting, the foreign ministers unanimously approved the candidacy of Kazakh Ambassador to Austria Kairat Sarybai for the post of Executive Director of the CICA Secretariat.
In addition, Presidents of the member states held a constructive exchange of views on the most pressing issues of the international and regional agenda. In particular, they discussed the cooperation issues between the CICA member states in the context of the spread of the novel coronavirus and prospects for cooperation in the post-COVID-19 era.
The meeting participants emphasized the importance of closer cooperation under the CICA. They expressed their intention to enhance cooperation to strengthen peace, security and prosperity in Asia during the period of Kazakhstan’s chairmanship in the forum.
