UN Security Council Acknowledges the Importance Of Astana Process
A regular meeting on discussion the situation in Syria took place at the UN Security Council. The current situation around Idlib and the importance of launching the country's Constitutional Committee were highlighted in the meeting. Calls for respect for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity were also voiced at the meeting.
The UN experts and representatives said that as part of the Astana process, practical results have been achieved on reconciliation of the parties in the face of government troops and the armed Syrian opposition.
Specific proposals for resolving the situation in Syria are developed for the third consecutive year at the dialogue platform in Kazakhstan’s capital. The exchange of prisoners has taken place as a result of the agreement signed between the country guarantors of the Astana process.
“The viable process cannot just be about meetings in Geneva. It needs to address real-life problems for Syrians from the outset. During the reporting period, four simultaneous release operations took place under Iran, Russia, Turkey and the UN working group. I’m pleased that international players have responsibility to deepen their dialogue and support the UN-facilitated process,” said UN Special Envoy of Secretary-General for Syria, Geir Pedersen.
