SCO summit: Expert opinion
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has reached a new stage in its development. This year, the SCO became the Big Eight of Eurasia as two large Asian countries, India and Pakistan, joined the member countries of the organization. According to experts, as the largest regional organization, the SCO will affect the global economic and political developments and the international security. The SCO member countries unanimously supported the global initiatives of the Kazakh President, Nursultan Nazarbayev announced at the United Nations (UN) Security Council. Experts said that this fact demonstrated the high confidence that Kazakhstan has the power to affect the international processes.
DAWIT YIRGA WOLDEGERIMA, POLITICAL COORDINATOR, PERMANENT MISSION OF ETHIOPIA TO UNITED NATIONS:
- We really appreciate Kazakhstan for organizing this and of course we know very well the role, the important leadership that Kazakhstan is playing in the Security Council. On this specific issue on countering terrorism we are very happy that we are working together in the Council. Especially on the Code of Conduct so we wish Kazakhstan all the best and we really appreciate the work that you are doing.
The SCO member countries reached a new level of cooperation in transport and logistics sector. The countries are enhancing their joint efforts in the alignment of the Chinese One Belt, One Road initiative and the regional integration projects, particularly the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). According to experts, the SCO may also serve as one of the key cooperation platforms.
YURI TAVROVSKY, RUSSIAN EXPERT ON ASIA:
- The Belt and Road project involves construction of railroads and highways that will lead to Saint Petersburg. It is a real belt. New cities, plants, institutes and museums are being established as part of the initiative. Kazakhstan always plays a role of the initiator and mastermind of integration processes. The Kazakh president’s visit to China showed that Kazakhstan is one of the biggest enthusiasts of this project. Due to its wise policy, Kazakhstan gives the top priority to its national interests and this policy yielded positive results. There is a railroad constructed from China to the Caspian Sea as part of the Nurly Zhol project. Kazakhstan is also involved in the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) and other projects that are bringing profit to Kazakhstan.
Meanwhile, German political experts highly appreciate the results of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s state visit to China. The expert from Berlin, Matthias Dornfeldt highlighted the importance of implementing the President’s initiative on the construction of the high-speed Eurasian Railway connecting Beijing, Astana, Moscow and Berlin.
MATTHIAS DORNFELDT, GERMAN POLITICAL EXPERT:
- I think that Nursultan Nazarbayev’s visit to China was eventful and successful. The two parties reached agreements on many projects. The Kazakh and Chinese businessmen signed multi-billion contracts that will give Kazakhstan the opportunity to attract capital investments and create jobs. These agreements will produce a great effect on Kazakhstan. Businessmen from other countries will be willing to invest more in Kazakhstan. In my opinion, it is very important to develop cooperation in the field of transport. Kazakhstan has a great logistic potential, as the new Silk Road is passing through the country. Therefore, Nursultan Nazarbayev’s initiative aimed at the development of infrastructure and transport routes is strategically important. Many German politicians stress that Kazakhstan is becoming an important transit hub in the region.
