100 New Faces of Kazakhstan: Denis Kuzin, Olympic speed skater

The ‘100 New Faces of Kazakhstan’ project is a true story of people from all over Kazakhstan. They are successful due to their hard work, knowledge and talent. One of the winners of the national competition is speed skater Denis Kuzin. He admits that the project has inspired him to set further goals. Now the finalist is actively involved in social work to promote speed skating in Kazakhstan and sharing his extensive experience with the younger generation.

DENIS KUZIN, WINNER OF PROJECT:

 - After the Olympics, I thought ‘I had to finish’ but this project gave me a boost. After the Olympic season, I began to travel to villages, which was interesting. At the last Championship of Kazakhstan, I won three medals: silver, bronze and gold. The gold medal was my return to the big sport. Within a week we are heading to Japan for the World Cup where we will be ready for it.

This year Denis celebrated the 20th anniversary of his sports career. He took part in the World Universiade, the World Cups, the Olympic Games and the Asian Games. In 2013, at the World Championships in Sochi, Kuzin won the first gold in the history of Kazakhstan’s speed skating. This victory happened due to Denis's willpower. A year earlier, after a complicated injury, he wanted to end his sports career. However, coaches persuaded the athlete to stay.

DMITRIY BABENKO, COACH, KAZAKH TEAM ON SPEEDSKATING:

 - As far as I know him as an athlete, he fits his sports. The last Championship of Kazakhstan showed that he can win this distance. We had a previous start in Germany; he came fourth among all the guys.

DENIS KUZIN, WINNER OF PROJECT:

 - We have a new coach. Last year we ran with him, our team has immediately increased three times and the program has changed. We’ve begun to train more regularly. There is more emphasis on ice training. Results have increased for everyone and there is more competition.

Denis dreams of Kazakhs winning in the international arena. He believes that our athletes have everything to accomplish this.
