Kazakhstan intends to establish cooperation with South Korea in areas like new digital technologies, industrialization and medicine. Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev met with the Speaker of the South Korean Assembly Chung Sye-kyun in Astana. The Kazakh leader highlighted the development of trade and economic relations between the two countries. Mutual trade is estimated at US$2 billion a year. Chung Sye-Kyun mentioned the strategic nature of the bilateral ties between the two states. He also noted the rapid pace of Astana's development and the success of the Astana EXPO 2017 and Winter Universiade held in Kazakhstan in 2017.
NURSULTAN NAZARBAYEV, PRESIDENT OF KAZAKHSTAN:
- Kazakhstan has good relations with your country. I visited South Korea a year ago. We agreed on many joint topics; the trade is developing. South Korea cooperates with our entire region and our neighbors support this cooperation. Your visit is very important to us. We have the opportunity to sum up our cooperation with you and strengthen the ties. Trade turnover between our countries is about 2 billion dollars, it is rather small. Kazakhstan wants to cooperate with your country in the areas of innovative and digital technologies, in industrialization, healthcare and other areas. Goods from your country are delivered to us via Lianyungang port, where we have our own terminal. These are new opportunities for us.
CHUNG SYE-KYUN, SPEAKER OF SOUTH KOREAN NATIONAL ASSEMBLY:
- I would like to thank you, mister President, for the opportunity to meet and discuss the issues of the bilateral cooperation. I visited Astana for the first time in 2006 as a Minister of Commerce and Industry. And I am surprised by the rapid development of the capital of Kazakhstan.
