‘The era of Independence,’ Idea of President of Kazakhstan about nuclear-weapon-free world
Kazakhstan is one of initiators and leaders of the global anti-nuclear movement. The entire international community recognizes this fact. According to experts, the initiatives of President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev are aimed at achieving nuclear-weapon-free world. The specific anti-nuclear proposals of Nursultan Nazarbayev to the international community can be found in the president’s book titled ‘The Era of Independence.’
During my speech at the 66th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2011, I proposed the world community to develop the Universal Declaration on a nuclear-weapon-free world. In addition, I invited the UN member states to reduce their military budget by 1% and invest these funds into the UN Special Fund for the Sustainable Development Goals. In conclusion, I announced that Kazakhstan put forward its candidacy for non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council for 2017-2018. At that time, New York hosted a high-level meeting on nuclear safety with the participation of world leaders, where I presented three principles of nuclear safety, specifically: advancing the entire mechanism of the planet, development of clear mechanisms for rapid response to emergencies as well as giving information on any events at nuclear facilities.
