Another round of negotiations on Syria settlement will be held in the Kazakh capital on October 30 and 31 as part of the Astana process. This is reported by the Foreign Ministry of Kazakhstan. It is expected that the meeting will be attended by all the guarantor countries, Russia, Turkey and Iran, as well as representatives of the Syrian government and the armed opposition. The sixth round of talks in Astana in September ended with the adoption of a joint statement on the intention of the parties to continue work on creating de-escalation zones in Syria. These measures have significantly reduced the scale of the conflict and improved the humanitarian situation in Syria.
ANUAR ZHAINAKOV, HEAD OF PRESS SERVICE, KAZAKH FOREIGN MINISTRY:
- The regulations are expected to be approved by the working group concerning the release of hostages, prisoners, the transfer of bodies of the dead and the search for missing persons. The parties also intend to consider combating international terrorism and adopt a joint statement on the humanitarian demining of Syria.
Italian academic circles highly appreciate Kazakhstan’s peacemaking role and the results of the Astana process. Kazakhstan’s capital was the first to bring the opposition parties at the negotiation table. Experts highlight that this has undoubtedly become one of the main achievements of the Astana negotiation process. Keeping neutrality, Astana contributes to resolving the most complicated conflict.
GIANNICOLA SALDUTTI, STAFF, INSTITUTE OF GEOPOLITICAL STUDIES IN ITALY:
- Negotiations in Astana are the initiatives which complement the Geneva process. The important result of the first meeting was the unification of the parties particularly, Russia, Iran and Turkey who directly involved in the Syrian conflict. In this case, it is impossible not to mention the conclusion of the preliminary agreement on Syria’s de-escalation zones.
The Astana process can bring peace to Syria. German experts highlight the effectiveness of meetings in the Kazakh capital.
FRITYEV VON NORDENSCHOLDT, FORMER GERMAN AMBASSADOR TO FRANCE:
- In Germany we keep an eye on this Astana process. The war won’t solve the conflict, but will bring only death and destruction. Therefore, we support the negotiations taking place in Astana because only negotiations can help. Kazakhstan again and again offers its platform. The world should be grateful to Kazakhstan for this complicated and responsible mission. Kazakhstan plays a very important role of a mediator. The country doesn’t participate in any conflicts and possess neutrality and trust which are very important in conducting such negotiations.
