Safety at Nuclear Fuel Bank
The National Guard forces will provide the Security of the International Nuclear Fuel Bank in the East Kazakhstan region. Additional antitussive fences, a checkpoint, as well as modern means of detection are already installed. According to the information of the Kazatomprom national company, there is no threat to environmental safety: uranium will be stored in special containers, which will eliminate the leakage of radioactive substances. The capacities are resistant to large-scale natural disasters and technogenic catastrophes.
NIKOLAY BELOVOLOV, PROJECT MANAGER, KAZATOMPROM:
- The amount of uranium will be stored in special containers. They are certified by the International Atomic Energy Agency. According to experts, they are absolutely safe in terms of radiation safety. There will be no surface contamination. The dose rate will be the same as the natural one.
The opening ceremony of the nuclear fuel bank is scheduled for August 29th at the Ulba Metallurgical Plant in Oskemen. It is established under the auspices of the IAEA. The bank will store up to 90 metric tonnes of low-enriched uranium in the form of hexafluoride. This will ensure a guaranteed supply of products to nuclear power plants of the IAEA member states. In general, experts highlight that the opening of the International Nuclear Fuel Bank will be Kazakhstan’s another contribution to the cause of global security, which is becoming increasingly relevant in the world.
