Low-enriched uranium bank to open soon
Low-enriched uranium bank will appear in Kazakhstan under the IAEA control. This will happen on August 29 on the International Day against Nuclear Tests. For Kazakhstan, it is a good opportunity to promote national and economic interests. Kazakhstan is a major producer of uranium and an exporter of uranium fuel. Kazakhstan is also a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the next two years, which allows Kazakhstan to promote initiatives to develop peaceful nuclear energy. Scientists and prominent figures will be able to discuss ideas on nuclear non-proliferation at the 62nd Pugwash Conference to be held in Astana on 25-28th of August.
SANAT KUSHKUMBAYEV, DEPUTY DIRECTOR, KAZAKHSTAN INSTITUTE FOR STRATEGIC STUDIES:
- Kazakhstan is a beneficiary in terms of export and control over nuclear fuel. In this regard, this bank is a sign of high recognition. On the other hand, Kazakhstan is a major producer of nuclear fuel for peaceful energy. This also adds credibility in terms of promoting our national economic interests in the world. This is the initiative of President Nursultan Nazarbayev to create a nuclear-free world. Moreover, Kazakhstan has played a major role in the creation of a nuclear-weapon-free zone.
