EXPERTS ON ASTANA PROCESS
Syria Talks are bearing results. According to experts, the seventh round of talks in Geneva was very constructive. As the UN Special Envoy on Syria noted, there is a certain progress in the negotiations between the technical experts. According to him, they are preparing the ground for common vision of the opposition. Steffan de Mistura has also said that the Astana Process made a considerable contribution to the success of the Geneva talks on Syria. International experts have also noted the important role of the Astana Process in settling the Syrian conflict. After all, the talks are shaping the future of not just one country but the whole region, expert of the Eurasian Research Center in Turkey, Eray Güçlüer said.
ERAY GUCLUER, EXPERT ON FIGHT AGAINST TERRORISM, EURASIAN RESEARCH CENTER, TURKEY:
- Astana is a very important dialogue platform in the Syrian settlement. The first meeting resulted in reaching the ceasefire by the guarantor countries including Turkey, Iran and Russia. Later, de-escalation zones were created. This is very important. There will be no clashes, no bloodshed. This is the most effective method of settling military conflicts.
Astana has become a good platform for negotiations on Syria. A decision to create zones of de-escalation in Syria was made in the capital of Kazakhstan. Russian military expert Vladimir Evseyev says that the further progress in negotiations process requires from all the parties to strive for peace.
VLADIMIR YEVSEYEV, MILITARY EXPERT, RUSSIA:
- Kazakhstan, I believe, is an ideal mediator, because it is in good relations with the states involved in the conflict. Kazakhstan does not take sides in this conflict. It provided a platform, created an atmosphere of sympathy for the negotiations. The creation of a platform is Nursultan Nazarbayev’s merit. He created all the necessary conditions to start the process. But in order for the process to succeed, all parties to the conflict must make an effort. They must be prepared for a compromise.
