GIFT FOR EXPO 2017
A resident of Eastern Kazakhstan made an unusual gift for EXPO 2017 in Astana. Bolat Tagabai made a huge handmade asyk. Visitors come to see this giant sculpture from all over the region. Kanat Kalikanov from the Koktubek village decided to dedicate the sculpture to his five-year-old daughter, Asylym.
KANAT KALIKANOV, RESIDENT, KOKTUBEK VILLAGE:
- The asyk is of great importance for the Kazakh people. This is our national game which improves skills like accuracy and dexterity. The game ingrains patriotic spirit in younger generation. We constantly organize asyk game competitions in the district.
The sculpture is 3x4 meters in size. It took the sculptor six months to make it. He used 50,000 sheep ankle bones. The author had been collecting them for 16 years and for which he entered the Guinness Book of World Records!
BOLAT TAGABAI, AUTHOR OF HANDMADE SCULPTURE:
- This is our national game and pride! We have a proverb "Asygyn alshysynan tussin". This is how people wish each other good luck. We want to use this big asyk to wish all our people best of luck, especially, during the expo. Let the whole world know about Kazakhstan!
The exposition, a huge asyk on a pedestal, is rather unique.
ZHOMART BOLATULY, MASTER’S SON:
- We made this big asyk together with my dad. Now we give it to Nursultan ata! He will like it!
The master intends to build a playground, too. So the foreign visitors can delve into the traditions of the Kazakh people.
