The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura believes in order to resolve the Syrian conflict it is essential to hold a new round of talks in the capital of Kazakhstan. According to him, the Astana process made a significant contribution to the preservation of truce between the warring parties. Recently, Geneva hosted the fifth round of negotiations on Syria. Discussions were held through mediators, as the government delegation and the opposition representatives refused to meet directly. During the fifth round, according to Staffan de Mistura, the participants negotiated on the problems of formation of an interim government and elections issues.

Russian politicians in Moscow also emphasize an important role of Astana process in the settlement of the Syrian conflict.
