Reviving the traditions
Thirty strongest eagle hunters from across Kazakhstan competed in Atyrau in the republican tournament Kansonar-2017. Hunters with Golden Eagles and hawks competed in the ability to control their pets; the hunting birds competed in precision and tenacity.
BAGDAT MUPTEKEKYZY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ‘KYRAN’ FEDERATION:
Golden eagle is our symbol. And at all times, the attitude towards the bird was special. It is the only bird that can fly towards the sun, and it says a lot about its character. We see that this sport has been reborn, but you cannot dwell on the small success. We need to develop it further.
Experts note that every year the number of competitors is growing.
ONERBAY ZHANBALA, DIRECTOR, REGIONAL CLUB ON ATIONAL SPORTS:
We have teams from eight regions of Kazakhstan. This is a spectacular event. I am glad that the national sports, namely hunting with birds of prey is gaining popularity with every year.
Eagle hunting is an art and requires a lot of patience, effort and time to master. It is passed down on from generation to generation - from a father to a son. So, the competing teams often represent dynasties.
BAURZHAN YESHMETOV, EAGLE HUNTER:
My father and grandfather were also eagle hunters. I was introduced to the craft at an early age and I took over the tradition. I’m competing in this tournament with my son and grandson. The most important thing is that we see a revival of this kind of national traditional hunting in Kazakhstan. Youth school has been opened. That is really good.
This year, the tradition eagle hunters competed in the ability to catch hares and pigeons. In the final, foxes and wolves were the prey for the hunters.
