Astana process – big step towards peace
Astana process is a big step in the establishment of peace on the Syrian territory, German politicians say. Kazakhstan has once again become a mediator and managed to have all the involved parties enter the negotiations. This is a great achievement, the Parliamentary Secretary of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag, Andreas Jahn believes.
ANDREAS JAHN, SECRETARY, FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE, GERMAN BUNDESTAG:
These negotiations were conducted due to Kazakhstan’s initiative. We are very grateful that Kazakhstan has made a huge effort to peaceful settlement of the conflict. It is good that these negotiations took place in Astana. I would emphasize that Kazakhstan holds a neutral position. We appreciate the efforts of your country, and the fact that Kazakhstan managed to bring together all the parties at a round table is a huge step in the establishment of peace.
The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Stephen O'Brien believes that the agreement achieved by Russia, Iran and Turkey at a meeting in Astana gives hope for a better future in Syria.
STEPHEN O'BRIEN, UN UNDER-SECRETARY-GENERAL FOR HUMANITARIAN AFFAIRS:
This is also a hope that further consolidation of the ceasefire will help to create a supportive environment for the resumption of interest in Syria negotiations in Geneva under the auspices and leave the United Nations as per the relevant Security Council resolutions.
As the Russian experts note, Astana Process breathed new life into the negotiations on Syrian issue. This is a very important step towards the restoration of peace, the economy and civil society in Syria.
OLGA KOVITIDI, MEMBER OF FEDERATION COUNCIL'S COMMITTEE ON DEFENSE AND SECURITY:
It is necessary to highly appreciate the efforts of Astana and the President Nursultan Nazarbayev in the provision of a negotiation platform, firstly, because Astana maintains friendly relations with all the participants in the talks at the moment. Secondly, Astana created conditions for peaceful settlement of the Syrian conflict. It's a great and long-term work that needs to be done for the sake of future generations and for the sake of strengthening the world order.
Astana process is the only platform to find solutions to the Syrian conflict, according to the American political scientist and the Director of the Center for Energy, Natural Resources and Geopolitics of the Washington based Institute for the Analysis of Global Security.
ARIEL COHEN, POLITICAL SCIENTIST, USA:
Kazakhstan has become a central player in the process of settlement of the Syrian conflict. Astana Process is useful in finding a solution. It shows the growth of Kazakhstan’s prestige and its key role in this matter. It is very important to stop the bloodshed there, so the role of Astana Process is very important, and Kazakhstan’s initiative is highly appreciated. Kazakhstan has a record, an experience in leading the negotiation processes, including the Iranian nuclear program. So I believe the future of Astana, and Kazakhstan's role as a neutral mechanism for negotiations, as an international center is very important.
