Ancient Kazakh settlements are to enter UNESCO World heritage list
The ancient settlements Otyrar, Syganak, Sauran and Sarayshyk located in the Syr Darya area of the Great Silk Road will be included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site. The National Commission for UNESCO discussed the list of objects at the meeting in Astana. According to Minister of Culture and Sports Arystanbek Mukhamediuly, after the assignment of such nominations, international experts will help with the restoration of the ancient settlements. And according to the head of department, the status of World Heritage sites will help to draw particular attention to the ancient Kazakh cities. In general, Kazakhstan is actively cooperating with this international organization. For example, last year, Cultures Rapprochement Center opened in Kazakhstan under the auspices of UNESCO.
Arystanbek MUKHAMEDIULY, MINISTER OF CULTURE AND SPORTS OF KAZAKHSTAN:
Last year, for the first time, we managed to include the first section of the Silk Road into the World Heritage List. Now we are applying for combined nominations with individual countries such as China, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. And our task now is to revive the great Silk Road. And Syrdarya segment of the Great Silk Road is very important for us. If we include it into the list of UNESCO, then restoration work will be carried out not only by the Kazakh side but also by the UNESCO experts.
