Kazakhstan plans to introduce new types of probation
New types of probation are planned to be introduced in Kazakhstan. As it was told on Tuesday in Astana by the experts in the field of criminal law, one of the probations is the pre-trial, when the judges prepare a detailed report with the personal characteristics of the defendant. Proceeding from it, it will be possible to take a decision on the punishment, not involving deprivation of liberty. Another type of probation, which is planned to be introduced in the country is the penitentiary. It implies that the probation officers will prepare prisoners for release. With this aim, a special program of social adaptation will be developed. According to experts, all these innovations will not only reduce the level of crime and the prison population, but also maintenance costs.
Steven PITTS, INTERNATIONAL AMBASSADOR OF EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION OF PROBATION:
One of the reasons that probation is really very good idea something which is gaining ground right around the world. Because, probation is generally more effective than prison sentences, at reducing reoffending. It is more likely to make community safer than imprison. It is also very much less expensive than imprison. We know from own figures it is about 10% of the cost of sending someone to prison.
