Auezov Kazakh State Drama Theater presented the play "Ahiko from Aktas"
Auezov Kazakh State Drama Theater presented the play "Ahiko from Aktas". It became the first production in the history of Kazakhstan's dramatic art staged in Japan. This is a story about the Japanese Ahiko Tetsuro, who was put in Karlag labor camp to serve the unjust punishment after the Second World War when he was a teenager.
More than 15,000 Japanese were imprisoned in Karlag camp. Ahiko Tetsuro didn’t leave Kazakhstan. The Japanese did not understand why their compatriot is not going back home after being released. Drama gives an answer to this question.
TAKEO KAWAMURA, CHAIRMAN, KAZAKHSTAN-JAPAN FRIENDSHIP PARLIAMENTARY LEAGUE:
- I feel sorrow for Ahiko. The actors and the production itself tell about his fate very well.
OKOSHI KENSUKE, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, NHK TELEVISION:
- Ahiko Tetsuro has gone through the severe hardships in Kazakhstan. It was vividly shown in the play. However, he survived thanks to the support of local people, and that is why he has warm feeling towards the country. This staging gives good impression and awakens a feeling of love for the motherland.
The production of Auezov Kazakh State Drama Theater touched the hearts of the audience, and the Japanese, usually extremely reserved for emotions, gave vent to their feelings. Kazakhstan’s theatrical art was highly appreciated by professional critics.
YUKO TAKIGUCHI, ACTRESS:
- When I saw the scene of brutality I was shocked how cruel people can be. But when the Kazakh mother sheltered children of different nationalities, brought them up and gave a chance to start a new life, I was again assured that only love helps us to fight evil and overcome any difficulties.
The theater went on tour as part of the Modernization of Public Consciousness program. One of its main tasks is to promote the Kazakh culture in the world.
YOSHIHIRO NAKAMURA, THEATER CRITIC:
- I have seen nearly 6,000 various productions in my career and was impressed by the Kazakh play. I saw high acting skills, the professionalism of playwrights.
The tour marked the beginning of a great cultural interaction and cooperation between the theaters of the two countries. They are planning for joint projects and professional exchange of experience.
