New alphabet will comply with the laws of phonetics and pronunciation, articulation and vowel harmony
People in Kazakhstan are actively discussing the upcoming reform of the Kazakh alphabet. According to scientists, philologists and public figures, the Latin script will preserve the sounds that are specific to the Kazakh language. This means that the new alphabet will comply with the laws of phonetics and pronunciation, articulation and vowel harmony. In addition, transition to the Latin script can enrich the Kazakh language and help people of Kazakhstan become closer to the world community.
ABILKHAN TOLEUSHOV, CHAIRMAN, REGIONAL OFFICE, KAZAKH LANGUAGE COMMUNITY:
- Introducing Latin Script to Kazakh has not only a long-term political basis, but also an economic one. Today we see that the world’s developed countries, including the United States, the European Union and Southeast Asian countries use English in their daily lives in addition to their state language. In other words, the world economy and trade, innovation and technology are bound to English and thus, to Latin script.
SAGYNDYK SALMURZIN, HEAD, REGIONAL OFFICE, WORLD ASSOCIATION OF KAZAKHS:
- We studied the countries that experienced the transition to Latin. We approached the Latin alphabet with this evolutionary correct scientific method. I think that it is necessary to introduce it faster. 80% of information technologies, science and production use the Latin font.
According to Kazakh educators, the Latin script will allow the republic to better integrate with the global world. Latin script will help learners to read and write better in English, the experts believe.
GULZADA ASAVBAYEVA, FACULTY, EASTERN KAZAKHSTAN STATE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY:
- There are many opinions on how the Latin alphabet can be useful for us. Our children will have an opportunity to learn English faster because now all schools have the trilingual education system. We need to know English as a global language of business and communication. The world is moving towards a stronger integration and cooperation.
According to experts, foreign nationals will have a better access to the Kazakh literature with introduction of the Latin script. This will help strengthen cultural ties between Kazakhstan and other countries.
