Transition to the Latin script is being widely discussed in Kazakhstan. The regional branch of the People’s Assembly of Kazakhstan in Uralsk made an Appeal in connection with the reform. Members of the People’s Assembly called for supporting the transition. In their opinion, the change of the alphabet will let preserve the identity of the state language and positively affect the rapprochement with the Turkic-speaking countries.
GAISA KAPAKOV, DEPUTY CHAIRMAN, PEOPLE’S ASSEMBLY OF KAZAKHSTAN, WEST KAZAKHSTAN REGION:
- There are so many countries using the Latin script. It will be easier for them to read in Kazakh or learn Kazakh alphabet and the language in the Latin script. The application of the Kazakh language will expand.
Scientist Altynbek Sharipbai noted that the new alphabet will be more convenient in terms of using new technologies. According to the professor, transition to the Latin script is a historical necessity for Kazakhstan, which will foster the integration into global scientific and technological processes. However, in order to avoid the mistakes of other states, where the adaptation to the Latin alphabet took many years, it is necessary to use balanced and competent approach.
ALTYNBEK SHARIPBAI, DOCTOR OF TECHNICAL SCIENCES:
- First, we need to determine the composition and classification of Kazakh sounds. That is, we need to introduce a standard of phonetics for the Kazakh language. These sounds should be designated by the international standard in a phonetic alphabet, that is, should have adequate transcription and designations. After the designation in the international alphabet, it is necessary to choose appropriate letters in the Latin alphabet. That's the whole process.
