Implementation of Agricultural Innovations in Kazakhstan
Advanced technologies are under active implementation in the agricultural sector of Kazakhstan. Application of innovations resulted in doubling of the yield of cotton in Shardara district of Turkistan region. With the use of conventional methods of growing plants, the yield of crops doesn’t exceed 30 quintals per hectare. The innovative method, including application of the drip irrigation and the plastic film allows producing over 60 quintals. The water consumption and the use of mineral fertilizers are reduced by three times. The new method applied in Shardara district is used in 700 hectares out of 24,000.
BAZARBAY AKHMETOV, CHIEF FARM AGRONOMIST:
- We are growing the Chinese variety, which has a heavy yield. Due to the plastic film and the hose pipes, the plants ripen almost two weeks earlier, which saves water and labor force. This plastic film is applied to prevent grass from growing and keeps the moist as there are problems with water here. We use the hose pipes to provide water to every field.
KAIRAT ZHOLDYBAY, DEPUTY GOVERNOR OF SHARDARA DISTRICT:
- We collected over 50,000 tonnes of cotton last year. This year, we are planning to collect bigger yield of approximately 60,000. The price is expected to be the same as last year which totaled 170 tenge.
Meanwhile, the crop breeders of Kostanay region produced an unusual variety of violet potatoes using the crop samples from South Korea. The colored crops were planted at a test field where organic products are growing.
KUDAIBERGEN KHAIDARULY, HEAD OF FARM:
- There is the green manured fallow, followed by the bare fallow and on the third year we plant vegetables or potatoes. It is the system of crop rotation. We don’t use organic fertilizers and herbicides to kill the weeds. These are organic products.
According to scientists, the violet potatoes produce a more beneficial effect on human health. These potatoes contain less starch and sugar and a great number of microelements beneficial for human body. The farmers are planning to grow the potatoes on an industrial scale.
ANDREY UDOVITSKIY, CANDIDATE OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES:
- The biologically active substances contained in the colored potatoes possess high antioxidant properties. They are even capable of inhibiting the growth of cancer cells and improving eyesight as they affect the retina.
The patent for the new variety of potatoes will provide an opportunity to sell violet potatoes in other countries. Such potatoes are very valuable in Western Europe. For example, one kilogram of the unusual variety of potatoes costs 200 Euro in France.
