106,000 more coronavirus cases were reported worldwide in the last 24 hours. According to the data from Johns Hopkins University, reported cases of COVID-19 infection in 188 countries exceed 6.1 million. The novel coronavirus killed more than 372,000 people in the world. Nearly three million global COVID-19 patients reported to have recovered.

The United States have been the hardest-hit country in the global pandemic for already several weeks. The COVID-19 infected almost 1.8 million people in the country, and this is not the limit. Experts predict, that the number of infections in the U.S. states will continue to grow. The government authorities are concerned that the infection rate will sharply rise due to the mass protests against police brutality that hit almost the whole country.

Even though the United States is the first country in the world in terms of the number of coronavirus cases and deaths, they are not the first in terms of the speed of the spread of the infection. Brazil has been showing records in the number of new COVID-19 cases per day for the third day in a row. More than 33,000 more coronavirus cases were registered in the country in the last 24 hours. Brazil reported a total of more than half a million COVID-19 cases. Currently, Brazil is the second worst-hit country in the world in terms of the number of confirmed coronavirus cases.

India is also observing the record increase of the COVID-19 infection rate. More than 8,000 new cases of coronavirus infection were registered in India in the last 24 hours. However, India’s Ministry of Home Affairs is introducing the phased reopening of the public places and reduced the curfew hours at night. The increasing number of the new COVID-19 cases is also reported in Latin America, including Chile, Peru and Mexico.

Meantime, Russia, which is currently third in terms of the number of the confirmed COVID-19 cases, approved the antiviral drug to treat coronavirus patients. According to Russia’s Ministry of Health, it approved the COVID-19 drug after the clinical trials. It is the first antiviral drug registered against coronavirus in Russia. It has already shown efficacy in treating patients with coronavirus during human trials. However, the Western scientists said that they would like to study the medication in detail before deciding whether to use it in the treatment of the patients infected with COVID-19. The Wall Street Journal website reported that the drug is known as favipiravir. Initially, it was developed as a flu drug. To date, there are nearly 415,000 COVID-19 cases in Russia.

The United Kingdom remains in the fourth place in the world in terms of the cases of the coronavirus infection. The country reported a total of 276,156 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Spain is the next with a total of nearly 240,000 coronavirus cases, followed by Italy, India, France and Germany. Peru is the 10th worst-hit country in the world in terms of the number of infections.
