Sturgeon farming gains momentum
The first spawn for growing sturgeon fry is received in Atyrau. It was managed to bring future fish species from Russian sturgeon, stellate sturgeon and sterlet. Sturgeon brood stock is originated in Kazakhstan after almost extinction in the wild. Now seven million fry grow in two hatchery ponds. They will be released in the Urals in less than a month.
Gilman SARSEMALIEV, DIRECTOR, URAL-ATYRAU STURGEON PLANT:
Adult sturgeon fishes live very little in the natural environment. Brood stock will allow Kazakh ichthyologists that do not depend of the fishermen catches, as well as fingerlings to restore the famous Caspian population. Now our task is to fill the existing herd of beluga sturgeon and stellate or spine.
