Kazakh film receives “Pardino d’argento” award at Locarno Film Festival

Kazakh film “History of Civilization” by director Zhannat Alshanova won “Pardino d’argento” (Silver Leopard) at the Locarno Film Festival, Switzerland. According to Kazakh Ministry of Culture and Sports, the ceremony was held online.

The “History of Civilization” was made last year in Almaty, starring composer Akmaral Zykayeva (Mergen) who also wrote music for the film and artist Aidar Alimbayev. The movie was an acting debut for both actors. The cinematographer of the film was Leandro Ferrao from Portugal.

Alshanova takes part in the Locarno Film Festival for the third year. The feature film “We Are Thankful” (South Africa production) co-produced by Alshanova was selected for the main competition program of the festival in 2018.

In 2019, Alshanova passed the selection to participate in the Béla Tarr director workshop in Locarno, where she made a film “Paola Makes a Wish.” The film’s world premiere took place in Locarno, and in January 2020 the film was selected for the main competition of the Sundance Film Festival.

Kazakh Minister of Culture and Sports Aktoty Raimkulova congratulated the Kazakh film director and wished her further creative achievements.
