Aitys Competition to be Held Online First Time in Kazakh History

This year, the aitys competition in Kazakhstan will be held online for the first time in the history. The viewers will be able to watch the competitions on social media. Aitys is the traditional Kazakh folk show, where two akyns (poets) compete in improvised verbal poetry accompanied by the music of traditional Kazakh instruments. Sixteen best improvisational poets from all over Kazakhstan will participate in the upcoming event.

“The online aitys competition has both its advantages and disadvantages. Obviously, there will be more spectators than we usually have during offline events, but it always feels better to perform in front of a live audience. Nevertheless, all poets agreed to participate in this online event. We think that people, who love this form of a folk art and have been waiting for the competitions, deserve to see the performances of their favorite poets,” said Kazakh poet Meirbek Sultankhan.

The winners will be chosen by a special jury and the online voting on ‘Antiсor_shtab_kz’ Telegram channel. The anti-corruption issues will be the main topic of this year’s aitys competition.

“It has been the ancient Kazakh tradition to raise pressing problems in the society through the poetic forms of public speaking. I think that we must turn to the Kazakh aitys competition and use it as the most effective cultural tool to popularize zero tolerance towards corruption,” said Kazakh Anti-Corruption Agency Chairperson Alik Shpekbayev.

The draw will be carried out on Thursday, April 9. The final round of online aitys competition will be held on April 18-19. By participating in this event, the Kazakh improvisational poets want to support and cheer up their compatriots during quarantine.
