14th Shaken Aimanov International Film Festival kicks off in Almaty on November 17

Masterpieces of world cinema and retro works of domestic masters will be presented. On November 17, the 14th Shaken Aimanov International Film Festival kicks off in Almaty. This year, the concept of the event has changed and become bigger. Spectators and participants will enjoy the program of Turkic cinema as well as non-commercial films.

KANAT TOREBAI, ACTING DIRECTOR, SHAKEN AIMANOV FILM FESTIVAL:

 - The Shaken Aimanov Film Festival has been changed this year. We are focusing on the cinema of the Turkic-speaking world. There are almost half a billion people living in Turkic space and fraternal republics of Central Asia are part of it. There are many small republics from Yakutia to Turkey within the Russian Federation. The festival does not intend to promote commercial cinema. Indeed, a strong program has been selected this year.

The competition program of the event will consist of three sections. Each of these sections is named after popular films of Kazakh cinema masters Shaken Aimanov: ‘The Crossroads,’ ‘The Land of Fathers’ and ‘We live here.’ Creative meetings and master classes are planned for the festival.

KANAT TOREBAI, ACTING DIRECTOR, SHAKEN AIMANOV FILM FESTIVAL:

 - We had over 300 applications, of which we selected 50. There was a serious selection committee and a lot of work was done. We selected 12 films out of 50 for the Turkic program, 12 films for the ‘Panorama of World Cinema’ international program and 10 films produced in Kazakhstan. There are several premieres of Kazakh cinema that have been produced recently. Both documentary and animated films will be presented in the Kazakh program.

The Cinema Week promises to showcase films from the Venice and Cannes film festivals, as well as masterpieces from Africa and Latin America.
