MANON BALLET PREMIERE
Masterpiece of the global art the ballet Manon will be staged in Astana Opera. The premiere of the drama ballet by famous British choreographer Kenneth Macmillan will be held on the 28th and 29th of April. Lady MacMillan entrusted the staging of her husband’s play to well-known ballet masters Karl Burnett and Patricia Ruanne. The ballet from the repertoire of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden was created based on the novel by Abbot Antoine Francois Prevost to the music of Jules Massenet. Astana Opera artists have been preparing for the premiere for two months. Almost the whole ballet troupe is involved in the production. The theater’s leading soloists Aigerim Beketayeva and Madina Basbaeva will perform the role of the main characters.
KARL BURNETT, DIRECTOR, CHOREOGRAPHER, UK:
- We were very happy to be here. The ballet, as I have said before, is a very unique piece and it’s technically very demanding of the dancers but also very demanding of all departments in the theatre be it stage department, be it the wardrobe especially. It’s a very complex wardrobe. It’s something completely new and very different to anything they’ve had in the repertoire before.
The ballet is the tragic love story of Manon Lescout and Chevalier des Grieux. The heroine faces a difficult choice between wealth and love. The party of the main character has long been familiar to art director of Astana Opera ballet troupe Altynai Assylmuratova. She performed the role of Manon at the London stage. The production author, Kenneth Macmillan helped the artist to get into the character.
ALTYNAI ASSYLMURATOVA, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, BALLET TROUPE, ASTANA OPERA:
- The ballet is very complex. It was performed at such great stages as Grand Opera. This is the scale of it. Of course, everything is new for our artists – the western technique, toe pointing and duet dancing. The main accent is put on duet dancing because it is a drama with charming music.
Manon ballet entered the list of Expo 2017cultural events. As Astana Opera artists say, unique choreography of the British masterpiece and Massenet’s beautiful music will fascinate spectators.
