Kristen Stewart is potential female James Bond
In a recent interview with E! News, Stewart and her Equals co-star Nicholas Hoult discussed the fact that he’s occasionally named on lists of proposed actors who could take over the role of 007 for Daniel Craig. Hoult said he was too young to play a traditional Bond, but Stewart pointed out that the role, as it’s been portrayed for decades, is “getting a little stale, VF reports.
Hoult endorsed the idea of Idris Elba taking over, which got the two talking about the backlash against Bonds who are not white and male. Then, Hoult jokingly imagined a fascinating scenario: “We’ll walk into the screen test and I’ll see you there dressed in a tuxedo,” he told Stewart, who started laughing and playing along. “I’ll be like, ‘Kristen, what are you doing here?’” Hoult continued. “I’ll just turn around and walk straight back out.”
The idea is downright cackle-inducing: take one of film’s most beloved male icons, and replace him with a woman—then hire an erstwhile (albeit very talented and accomplished) Twilight star to portray her. Something tells me this would leave a lot of fanboys both shaken and stirred. But hey, don’t forget that time Stewart proved her action chops in American Ultra. Her co-star in that film, Jesse Eisenberg, has starred in more action movies where that came from—and if he can do it, Stewart certainly can.
The hypothetical conversation around a female Bond is far from new: Emilia Clarke, Elizabeth Banks, Gillian Anderson, and Priyanka Chopra have all floated the possibility of taking over the part of 007, with varying degrees of sincerity.
