Kazakhstan acquires a strategic role in Central Asia
Kazakhstan, as a guarantor of stability and security in the Central Asian region, is strengthening its positions. According to expert at Brussels based Centre for European Policy Studies Hrant Kostanyan, Kazakhstan acquires a strategic role in the region. The expert said that the country has all the necessary resources and opportunities to ensure peace and stability in Central Asia. Kazakhstan also takes an active stand as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. The country can play a key role in stabilizing the situation in Afghanistan and thus, in Central Asia.
HRANT KOSTANYAN, EXPERT, CENTRE FOR EUROPEAN POLICY STUDIES IN BRUSSELS:
- Stability in Afghanistan is very important for Kazakhstan, as well as for Russia and the United States. These countries are interested in stabilizing the situation in Afghanistan, but not to spread it to Central Asia. Of course, considerable efforts are needed to fight radical Islam in Central Asia. All this can be done by strengthening cross-border cooperation in the intelligence service between the countries of the region.
