Kazakhstan to create a platform for online trading of domestic building materials

Kazakhstan is set to reduce the volume of building materials imported from overseas by 23 percent. Kazakh Minister of Industry and Infrastructure Development Beibut Atamkulov reported on the share of domestic products in the  sector during a government meeting. He said that 33 new projects are currently being implemented to meet market needs. As a result, it is planned to reduce the share of imports and increase the use of domestic materials in housing construction by 90 percent.

"This year we plan to launch eight import substitution projects on the production of five types of building materials, including glass, polyethylene pipes, dry building mixtures, fittings and ceramic tiles, with a production volume of 103 billion tenge (US$248 million). This will reduce the share of imports in the domestic market by an average of 15 percent,"  Atamkulov said.

In addition, it is also planned to implement projects for the production of thermal insulation materials, ceramic firebricks and sanitary ware. Their production will amount to 61 billion tenge (US$146.9 million). This will reduce the share of imports of these types of building materials by another 8 percent.

Creation of a special information platform 'Marketplace' for online trading of domestic building materials is being considered in order to reduce the price of products. The web portal will also allow real-time monitoring of the construction progress of each facility and utilization of funds by the mayors’ and governors’ offices in the country using computer vision technologies.

"This will reduce the cost of materials by 15 percent and ensure the transparency of the building materials market. With the support of the state, the online platform will provide an opportunity to sell building materials at a fixed cost," Atamkulov said.

He stressed that in the future it is planned to develop investment passports for main imported building materials. They will contain market research of products and raw materials, project location and description of the equipment used. Investment passports will make it possible to determine the prospects and expediency of the production deployment of certain building materials.
