‘A New Silk Road: Kazakhstan as a Logistics and Energy Hub between Europe and Asia’
Brussels hosted the 24th meeting of the Berlin Eurasian Club titled ‘A New Silk Road: Kazakhstan as a Logistics and Energy Hub between Europe and Asia’. The event was attended by delegates of over 50 European companies, as well as economic, financial and scientific organizations of the European Union and Kazakhstan. Kazakh ambassador to Germany Bolat Nussupov spoke about the priorities outlined in the State-of-the-Nation Address and the ways to enhance Kazakhstan’s role as a transport and logistics hub on the New Silk Road.
BOLAT NUSSUPOV, KAZAKH AMBASSADOR TO GERMANY:
- The meeting participants provided very interesting suggestions regarding Kazakhstan’s cooperation with Germany and the European Union. Kazakhstan is viewed as an important energy as well as transport and transit hub in Eurasia.
KURMANGAZY ISKAZIYEV, DEPUTY CHAIR, NATIONAL OIL AND GAS COMPANY:
- We operate on the largest projects such as Tengiz, Kashagan and Karachaganak. We emphasized the work that the Kazakh Government performs to improve Kazakhstan’s investment attractiveness. The new Code on Subsoil recently adopted by the Mazhilis allows simplifying the conclusion of contracts.
The Kazakh President’s initiatives announced at the 12th ASEM Summit have garnered interest among the meeting participants. The head of the Central Asia Division of the European External Action Service, Boris Iarochevitch, praised Nursultan Nazarbayev’s participation in the Asia-Europe Meeting and the results of his meeting with European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker. He stressed that Kazakhstan is the only country in the region to sign the Enhanced Partnership Agreement with the EU.
MICHAEL HARMS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, GERMAN COMMITTEE ON EASTERN EUROPEAN ECONOMIC RELATIONS:
- Our mutual trade turnover has significantly grown this year. Kazakhstan has a very interesting project aimed at the development of railway transportation, the Khorgos-Eastern Gate project on the New Silk Road. The productions will grow when the logistics are in place.
Following the meeting, European businessmen and politicians reaffirmed their interest in strengthening investment, trade, economic and political cooperation with Kazakhstan. The forum, established 12 years ago at the initiative of Nursultan Nazarbayev, has become a valuable dialogue platform for the discussion of cooperation aspects.
