Development of Astana Agglomeration
The success of Astana is a point for the long-term growth of Kazakhstan. The urban capital city can become the center of finance, medical and higher education. An interregional plan of 2020 was developed for the purpose of Kazakhstan’s success. The plan includes the implementation of 82 events in three key directions. It also includes major transport, economic and industrial projects. One example is the successful implementation of the smart city model in the capital.
RUSLAN DALENOV, FIRST DEPUTY MINISTER, KAZAKH NATIONAL ECONOMY:
- Currently, 10 interregional plans are being implemented on the instructions of the Head of State. It all is about big cities development strategies in the long term to 2050, including Astana. Overall, nine of the 10 actions planned have already been implemented. So far what is left is the detailed development of population centers in the urban area.
Furthermore, the Government plans to form an effective transport infrastructure system that connects the capital city with all the other regions in the country. One of the most large-scale projects for the development of the Astana’s urban area will be the construction of bypass ring road, the "South-western bypass of Astana".
A road section, which will close the ring road around the capital, will be constructed under the project. It will provide an opportunity to direct the flows of vehicles passing through the city by the bypass.
ZHENIS KASYMBEK, KAZAKH MINISTER FOR INVESTMENT AND DEVELOPMENT:
- In order to bring up bypass roads of Astana, the highway “South-Western Bypass of Astana” is under construction. The length of the road is 33 km. The road will be built according to the first technical category with four-lane traffic. In accordance with the contract, construction work was started in 2017 and the project is expected to be completed in 2019.
There are over one million population in the urban area of Astana at the end of 2017. This is almost seven per cent of the population of Kazakhstan. There are 124 settlements in the city. According to analysts’ projection, the population of Astana in the urban area will increase by 33 per cent to 1.6 million by 2030. In addition, more than 50 billion Tenge are allocated from the country’s budget for the implementation of the Interregional Plan in the next two years. Almost 800 million Tenge will be used from local budgets.
