Architectural Wonders of Astana
The main highlights of any city in the world are the facilities of urban architecture. Astana is no exception. Kazakhstan’s capital is known for its original architecture, particularly, unique administrative, cultural and residential buildings. Bridges play an important role in the urban landscape of the modern city and connect the right and left banks of the capital. Soon a new bridge, the Golden Bridge of the Silk Road, will be finished in the capital. The launch of the bridge is timed to a global summit of city mayors scheduled for early July in Astana. The bridge was designed by architect Shu Yong. The main element of the structure will be 20,000 amber bricks with installed national flowers of countries of the Silk Road.
ZHANETTA YESKENOVA, ORGANIZER, GLOBAL FORUM OF MAYORS OF SILK ROAD CITIES:
- Artist Shu Yong was inspired by the very implementation of the One Belt, One Road project. Therefore, he decided to focus on bricks that symbolize unification of all nations. Each brick will be a flower symbolizing a country along the Great Silk Road. There will be 53 flowers, which mean 53 large cities of the countries of the Silk Road.
In total, Astana has 17 bridges. The very first bridge was built across the Yesil River. Later it was demolished and instead a modern beam-arch bridge was built.
Experts say that this bridge with an unusual diagonal arch is the most unique in Astana.
ARLAN KASHKIMBAYEV, CHIEF ENGINEER, ‘KAZDORPROYECT’ BRIDGE DEPARTMENT:
- Bridges don’t each other. Even typical ones have peculiarities like different locations, intensity and hydrological data. There is not a single bridge like this, even if they are located side by side but they are not the same.
In addition to main large bridges and road junctions in Astana, there are about 40 small and 4 pedestrian bridges. One more bridge will be built very soon which will connect the Samal neighborhood and the Amphitheater which is under construction. This bridge is a gift to Astana from the Atyrau region.
ZHASULAN BISEMBAYEV, SPOKESPERSON, MAYOR’S OFFICE OF ATYRAU REGION:
- As part of a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the capital, the Atyrau region has built a cycling and pedestrian bridge in the heart of the city. This facility will be a good place for pastime and leisure of Astana residents. The facility has been built at the expense of the local budget and sponsorship funds.
According to a mayor’s office of Astana, by the end of 2019, the new bridge across the Yesil River will be built in the capital. It will connect a blossoming residential area in the expo and the area at the Kazakh Yeli Monument. According to a general plan of the city, 30 bridges will be built in Astana by 2030.
