2.5 million people will live in Astana by 2050
Astana will mark its 20th anniversary in July. Kazakhstan’s capital has become a well-known city in the world. A number of economic indicators contributed to the city’s rapid development, including attraction of investments as well as support for small and medium-sized businesses. Construction industry has been a driving force of growth from the very beginning. Over the 20 years, more than 20 million square meters of buildings have been erected in Astana. This is 14 times more comparing to 1998.
The capital’s transformation will continue. The eastern part of the town and the Kazakh Drama Theater will be built in Astana. The Wall of the World will also be the new landmark of the capital. Construction of the wall will be completed on Astana’s birthday. The architecture of Astana has already become a brand which attracts tourists. In 2011, more than 100,000 people visited the city, and in 2017, the capital welcomed nearly 800,000 visitors.
ALIBEK ABDRAIMOV, ARCHITECT:
- The city is divided into seven planning areas. Each area has its own planning center. The planning center includes administrative and business centers, trade and cultural centers, transport and transfer hubs as well as sports and recreational areas. These centers will serve as contour magnets of the areas so the people won’t need to take daily trips to a single city center.
13 bridges will be built in Astana in seven years. 50% of the territory of the megacity will be occupied with green areas. The special atmosphere and comfort of the modern city have led to the growth of Astana’s population. Today, over a million people live in the capital. This is four times higher than in 1998. According to forecasts, by 2050, 2.5 million people will live in Kazakhstan’s capital city.
DINARA ALIMOVA, PRESS SECRETARY, KAZAKH STATISTICS COMMITTEE:
- Astana’s population is one of the youngest. Astana residents have a median age of 30 years old. It seems to me that every Kazakh is proud of Astana.
In 20 years, Astana has become an indicative model of successful social and economic development of the country. More representatives of different countries come to get the experience of independent Kazakhstan’s main city.
