On May 9, Kazakhstan is celebrating one of the most important public holidays - the Day of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. The Great Patriotic War began on June 22, 1941, when Nazi Germany violated the Soviet-German treaties of 1939 and attacked the USSR. The Kazakh SSR sent in to the lines more than 1.2 million soldiers, 12 rifle divisions, 4 cavalry divisions, 7 brigades, about 50 separate regiments and battalions. For heroic deeds in the Great Patriotic War 499 citizens of the Kazakh SSR, including 99 Kazakhs were awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union title, Halyk Kakharmany, two Kazakhs girls - Manshuk Mametova and Aliya Moldagulova awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. 110 Kazakhs were awarded the Order of Glory of three degrees.
On the occasion of the Victory Day traditional wreath-laying ceremonies are held in all major cities of Kazakhstan: at the monument "Otan korgaushylar" in Astana and in Almaty at the Eternal Flame in the Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen, who died heroically on 16 November 1941 at the Dubosekovo during the defense of Moscow.
This year, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Victory veterans, home front workers will be awarded the Jubilee Medal. The President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed the Decree «On unique commemorative medal to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941 – 1945».
There is also the start of the "Zhenіske Kurmet - Thank You for the Victory!" action, which was initiated by the Khabar Agency. The staff of the agency decided to transfer one-day earnings to a special fund and the entire month till May 9, throughout the country Khabar correspondents will give valuable gifts to veterans, considering the wishes of each veteran. At a ceremony on April 9 at the National Museum in Astana in the framework of the action Khabar Agency presented gifts to veterans of the Great Patriotic War, and the National Museum exhibited unique exhibits of this historical period.
