It was on the 4th of June, 2007, during the 119th session of the IOC in Guatemala when Sochi (Russia) was chosen as the Winter Olympics host city. On the 1st of March, 2010, during the closing ceremony of the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, president of IOC, Jacque Rogge passed on the Olympic flag to the mayor of Sochi, Anatoliy Pakhomov. It was the XXII winter games and was held from the 7th to 23rd of February, 2014. After the Winter Olympic Games, Winter Paralympic Games of 2014 commenced. In comparison with the winter games that took place in Vancouver in 2010, the number of events in various disciplines increased by 12 resulting in 98 medal sets.
Russia's Sochi Olympic slogan «Hot.Cool.Yours.» reflected the Russian national character as well as the intensity of sporting battle and the passion of the spectators.
Kazakhstan`s national team competed in 8 sports at Vancouver Olympics. At Sochi Olympics 52 athletes represented Kazakhstan in 11 sports. No one doubts that it was hot on the White Olympiad arena. One of the medals went to our compatriot, Kazakhstani skater Denis Ten. On the figure skating competition in Sochi, Denis won 3rd place, for which he was awarded a bronze medal, which eventually became not only a single medal of the National team, but also the first Olympic medal in figure skating in Kazakhstan.
On his return to Kazakhstan, March 3, 2014 Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Sports and Physical training affairs honored Denis Ten an «Athlete of the Year» award in nomination «Breakthrough of the Year». On April 17 of the same year, Dennis was awarded the Order of Kurmet «For high achievements in sports at XXII Olympic Winter Games 2014 in Sochi».
