Former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres has been officially appointed as the next UN Secretary-General. The relevant resolution of General Assembly was adopted without a vote. Earlier, Guterres candidacy was approved by the UN Security Council. The ninth Secretary-General of the UN takes up his duties January 1, 2017.

When I heard the Security Council’s decision to recommend me to the General Assembly, my feelings could be described by just two words: gratitude and humility. It is with the same gratitude and humility that I stand before you today, now joined by a profound sense of responsibility.

Current Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hailed António Guterres as a wonderful choice to steer the United Nations. He noted that he intends to work closely with the future head of the UN to ensure a smooth transfer of power. In turn, Ban Ki-moon was given sincere gratitude for 10 years of work in the United Nations. The adoption of Paris agreement on climate change, which will come into force in early November, and approval of Sustainable Development Goals are among major achievements of the UN Secretary-General. Ban Ki-moon visited Kazakhstan three times and provided valuable support in promoting initiatives of the republic. For example, manifesto of Nursultan Nazarbayev has gained the status of an official document of the General Assembly.   Ban Ki-moon actively encourages the world to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
