Former Israeli President Shimon Peres is in intensive care after suffering a serious stroke, medical officials say.

The head of the Sheba Medical Centre in Tel Hashomer, where he is being treated, said Peres's stroke caused "lots of bleeding", BBC reports.

He had been sedated and was breathing with the help of a respirator, his office said.

In January, he underwent successful minor surgery at the same hospital after suffering a small heart attack.

Mr Peres underwent a series of tests after his arrival at the hospital on Tuesday, and a further assessment is due in the next several hours.

The former president's son, Chemi, said the family was going through some "difficult hours".
