August 27 was declared the national day of mourning for the victims of the devastating earthquake. All recreational activities are canceled on Saturday; the flag will be at half-staff during mourning. President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and other members of the country's leadership also attended the farewell ceremony. Earthquake hit central Italy on the night of August 24. According to local media, bodies of two more people were removed from the rubble. 284 people were killed in devastating earthquake. Hundreds of people received injuries of varying severity, 388 of them were hospitalized. According to the authorities, 40 people remain in critical condition.


Economic damage from the quake, according to preliminary estimates, exceeds $1 billion. The Italian government announced a state of emergency in the affected areas.
