According to the latest data, more than 160 people have been killed in the attempted coup d’état in Turkey and about 1,500 people wounded. Almost 3,000 people have been detained as announced by Prime Minister of Turkey Binali Yildirim. The coup was attempted against the Turkish President on Friday evening July 15. The rebels tried to seize the building of public authorities, military headquarters, and offices of the media, transport hubs and bridges. However their attempt to seize power failed. Turkish people condemned the actions of the rebels.

 

Murat AKTARAN, LOCAL RESIDENT:

Who betrayed their homeland do not want to see development and stability of our country. They want to sow discord and break our unity. We all came out to support the government and the head of our state.

 

In total, about 3,000 people have been detained during the investigation. Among them are the senior military officials of the Turkish armed forces.

 

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at the press conference at the airport in Istanbul that the perpetrators of the failed coup will be punished.

 

Recep TAYYIP ERDOGAN, TURKISH PRESIDENT:

There is a ruling party that has been elected by the people. And the president who also was democratically elected. We will perform our duty to the end. And we will not give the country into the hands of insurgents. People who participated in the failed coup will be punished.

 

World leaders condemned the military attempt to seize power.  President of the European Council Donald Tusk supported the democratically elected government of Turkey and called for the speedy restoration of the constitutional order in the country.

 

Russian Foreign Ministry also announced, it’s willing to work with the legally-elected government of Turkey.
