The forthcoming Universiade in Almaty may become the largest in the history of such competitions. At least 57 countries will take part in it. Previously, a record number of countries was registered in Turkey, which in 2011, received the athletes from 52 countries. The final number of participating countries will be determined on January 1. Preparation for the Universiade is currently well underway. All facilities are ready for the World Student Games. There are eight Universiade facilities in Almaty.
Almaty Arena, Halyk Arena and the Athletic Village have already been commissioned. Another six facilities are being upgraded.
Yerlan SAGADIYEV, KAZAKH MINISTER OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE:
By the end of the year we are planning to hold trainings in Nordic combined biathlon, alpine skiing, short-track, cross-country skiing, ski jumping in Almaty. Skating will be held in Astana, mogul in Ust-Kamenogorsk.
In addition, 100 tons of sports equipment from across the world was delivered to Almaty especially for the Universiade. One of the well-known companies will transport and store the equipment. Directorate of the sports event signed a contract with the company. All terms and conditions of the border crossing have already been negotiated with the relevant government authorities. Special preferential customs regime will operate for the Universiade.

It is a known global brand, which we hope will help solve one of the most important challenges in organization and preparation of the games at the highest level – which is logistics.
Domestic confectioners will produce 8.5 tons of chocolate, waffles and biscuits for the World Winter Universiade 2017. In addition, local producers will provide 850,000 liters of soft drinks. Also Kazakh sponsors are willing to undertake all costs related to meals during the Universiade. Currently, the organizing committee is choosing food products for athletes.
Didar SAGADIYEV, DEPUTY CHIEF OF ORGANIZING COMMITTEE, UNIVERSIADE 2017:
We held the analysis of quality of the products for our athletes in our market. There will be halal, vegetarian, Asian, European, and Kazakh cuisines. Taking this into account, we chose the best companies with the highest rates of quality. As for our athletes, for our guests the food is one of the main indicators.
Kazakh athletes are also preparing for the competition. 227 strongest athletes will participate in the games. They will hold 29 training camps in all sports. In addition, five test events are scheduled to be held in Almaty. This will allow checking the readiness of the facilities ahead of the Universiade and will become a kind of rehearsal for the athletes before participation in large-scale sporting event. The Universiade will be held from January 29 to February 8, 2017 in 12 sports.
