Status of Caspian sea: expert opinion

The Convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea signed at the Aktau Summit will help attract more investments. This opinion is shared by the Kazakh and foreign experts. According to analysts, foreign companies stepped up their activities in the region. The companies are ready to implement large-scale infrastructural projects in the region. Projects on exploration of oil and gas resources and construction of pipelines in particular will be launched.

AIZHAN MUKHYSHBAYEVA, EXPERT, INSTITUTE OF WORLD ECONOMICS AND POLITICS:

- Investors had concerns about certain risks at the Caspian Sea, because there was no clear demarcation of borders among the five countries. They thought that a project implemented at the Caspian Sea could become part of another country. After determination of clear borders of the Caspian Sea, investors can confidently invest in the infrastructure of the sea. The bed of the Caspian Sea was divided based on the median lines and the water was left for common use.

Determination of the legal status of the Caspian Sea will also contribute to the tourism development. A cruise by the sea is one of the opportunities that can be launched. According to the expert of the Institute of World Economics and Politics Ruslan Izimov, tourists can travel all around the Caspian Sea and visit five countries in one trip, such as Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Russia and Kazakhstan.

RUSLAN IZIMOV, EXPERT, INSTITUTE OF WORLD ECONOMICS AND POLITICS:

- It is a very attractive offer for our tourists and tourists from the European countries who can arrive in Azerbaijan and Turkey and travel across the Caspian Sea to Kazakhstan, Russia or Iran on a cruise. In my opinion, it is a very attractive package for our tourists and our domestic tourism.
